What you need from your advisor...
Domain expertise
Your advisor needs to understand your business. Not only will they be the
one speaking for you in innumerable situations, but most likely the majority of
your value is yet-to-be created and is locked in your yet-to-be-realized
synergies with your acquirer or in your venture financed growth.
Relationships and network
It's critical that your advisor is able to get your opportunity in front of the right
people, in a manner where it can be fully considered. In addition, an advisor with strong relationships in the
investment and strategic communities will have important insights and
perspectives on what specifically those groups are interested in seeing and how
best to position your company for a successful process.
Process and representation
You're partnering with an advisor to help you prepare yourself for a next level,
be it additional financing, acquisition or something in between. Your
advisor needs to make sure your company is ready for those changes, effectively
articulate and demonstrate the strength of your vision and energetically guide
you through to closure.
